Elliot Lazarus was born and raised in New York City. Trained as an architect, but frustrated by the discipline's inherent expressive constraints in practice, Lazarus embraced painting instead. He studied drawing and painting at the Art Students League of NY, and at The Bridgeview Academy. Lazarus' architectural core is evident in the strong geometric themes of much of his work.
Lazarus' current works are predominantly of oil paints on stretched canvas. He sometimes builds up three dimensionality by binding together multiple canvases.
The driving force of Lazarus' paintings is the exploration of the complex found within the simple. There are perhaps existential themes in his infinite spaces of single point perspective.
Having lived eight years in the city of Jerusalem, Lazarus has a particular sensitivity to stone textures and their interaction with light. Much of his work is a kind of meditation of light.
